Hire Me to Bring New Expertise, Tackle Your Marketing Projects, and Create Breakthrough Growth

I am trusted by nonprofits to provide the expertise of over 15 years of nonprofit and marketing experience. As a freelance consultant, I bring laser-focus to projects so you can rest assured that they will get the attention they need regardless of whatever new priorities emerge.

I am typically hired by nonprofits for one or all of these reasons:

To tackle specific marketing projects that require my experience and expertise

To be their on call marketing expert, available as-needed to support projects

To bring my expertise and experience as a strategy and thought partner

As a freelance marketing consultant for nonprofits, I am available for hire to help you tackle marketing projects that require the expertise of someone with extensive experience marketing for nonprofits or to supplement your existing team and resources with part time work to bring momentum to projects that have been stuck on the back burner.

For Over 15 Years, My Passion Has Been Helping Nonprofits

My passion is helping nonprofits with their marketing efforts so they can grow their email lists, increase program participation, innovate their strategies, achieve their fundraising goals, and ultimately accelerate their impact in the world.

Over 15 years ago, I started supporting nonprofits with their marketing efforts. My work began back in 2007 in college with the Environmental Affairs Board and California Student Sustainability Coalition at the University of California Santa Barbara. Through the years, I've had the opportunity to work with such nonprofits as Pachamama Alliance, Institute of Noetic Sciences, Room to Read, and Urban Adamah.

I worked in marketing at Pachamama Alliance for 6 years before starting my freelance consulting business in 2017. I realized I could help more nonprofits as a freelance consultant. As a freelance consultant, I am able to bring my expertise to more nonprofits and ensure that my time is hyper-focused on the projects that will have the greatest impact.

Also in 2017, I expanded my freelance services to include marketing for businesses. I focus on working with businesses that have a good mission including Greenopia, Strozzi Institute, Midnight Music, and Gil Alan Coaching. My work with businesses has led me on a path to become a Certified Expert for a marketing automation tool called Ontraport.

I have found that my work with businesses benefits my work with nonprofits. My understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges that nonprofits face combined with my bottom-line focus from the business world means that I am a more effective consultant for my nonprofit clients.

Today, I am as passionate about my nonprofit work as ever. I continue to seek out nonprofit clients that will benefit from my marketing expertise. My ultimate goal is to sustain my freelance business entirely with nonprofit clients so I can be spending all my time helping good organizations with good causes.

That's My Child, Mayu

I do this work for him and all the children yet to come

Today, I live in San Francisco, U.S.A. with my partner Maisa and our child Mayu. When I'm not consulting, I am writing music, riding my bike, and enjoying life!

Why A Bottom-Line Laser-Focused Business-Oriented Mindset is Good for Nonprofits

In 2017, I expanded my services to include working with businesses. My experience working with my businesses clients adds value to my work with my nonprofit clients.

One of the challenges that I have seen nonprofit marketing teams consistently face is bringing focus to the projects that are truly going to drive growth—growth in the size of the email list, growth in program participation, and growth in fundraising. Nonprofit marketing teams often have a list of projects that they know will drive this kind of growth, but they have trouble bringing focus to them because there is always a new project that comes up that they are asked to tackle. These projects typically have to do with promoting a new cause or campaign or communicating some news or updates to their existing email list. Nonprofit marketing teams often use up their finite time and resources updating the website, sending emails, posting on social media, or raising money from their existing email list. At the end of the year, they celebrate their incremental wins, but the breakthroughs that they know are possible have still not happened because they haven't been able to bring the type of laser focus that is needed to truly create breakthrough in growth. This all typically happens because the nonprofit truly isn't dependent on the marketing team to achieve the bottom line—raising the funds needed to keep the nonprofit running. So even though the marketing team wants to achieve growth goals, they end up spending most of their time and resources communicating with the existing constituency.

When working with my business clients, things are much different. Businesses have to earn revenue. And these days, the way they earn revenue is through their online marketing efforts. Yes, they spend time communicating to their existing list, but it is also absolutely essential that they are growing their list, reaching new customers, growing their revenue, diversifying their revenue streams, and automating their businesses process so that they can reduce costs and create sustainable revenue streams. With my business clients, these are not options—they are requirements. Too many times, nonprofits say they want to achieve these growth goals, but then they get distracted with other priorities and don't put the time in that is needed to achieve them.

After expanding my services to include businesses back in 2017, I started bringing the type of bottom-line thinking and focus of businesses back to my nonprofit clients. The result is that I coach my nonprofit clients on how to bring focus to the projects that will bring growth to their email lists, program participation, and online fundraising. By hiring me, they are able to bring the type of focus to these projects that can weather the competing priorities of nonprofit organizations. I can put consistent time and energy into these projects regardless of whatever new requests come up from the program team, executive team, or board. The outcome is that many of my clients see progress in their marketing and growth projects for the first time.

Freelance is Good for Nonprofits

Quickly bring laser-focus and expertise to your most important projects without laborious onboarding and longterm contracts

Many nonprofits haven't worked with freelancers before. They tend to hire full time or part time staff or search for an agency when they have a big project that goes beyond their team's competency. Nonprofits may even be skeptical of hiring freelancers, unsure if they'll have what it takes to work within the complexities of a nonprofit organization. But I'm here to say that freelance is good for nonprofits.

Benefits of Hiring a Freelancer

Here are eight benefits of hiring a freelance consultant to support your digital marketing team.

1

Hire for the exact expertise you are looking for

3

Get work that won't get sidetracked by urgent requests

5

Short-term or long-term commitment to meet your needs

7

An ongoing partnership to supplement your team

2

Bring focus to the projects you've struggled to kickstart

4

Fast onboarding to get started right away

6

Pay by the project, hour, day, or month

8

Adjust hours as your team's needs change

Hire a Freelancer with Nonprofit Experience

Hint...that's me 😀

It's crucial when hiring a freelancer for nonprofit work to hire someone that has experience working for nonprofits. You need someone who is aligned with and motivated by nonprofit work, who understands the cultural differences between businesses and nonprofits, who's experienced the unique challenges faced by nonprofit digital marketing teams face, and who understands the unique nature of the website-visitor-to-lead-to-donor funnel of nonprofits.

With my services, you get exactly this. I have 10 years experience working on staff at nonprofits and 6 years working with nonprofits and businesses as a freelancer. I bring the value of a freelancer, the insight of a nonprofit staffer, the wisdom of a business-oriented approach, and the expertise of over 15 years working in marketing, growth, and strategy.

What About Agencies?

I've seen too many nonprofits get burned by expensive agencies

One of the things that I've helped nonprofits with quite a number of times is to research and identify the right agency to do a big project such as a website rebuild or implement a growth strategy. Working with an agency can be a great solution for tackling a big project or bringing extra resources to your team. And sometimes the partnerships formed are super beneficial.

However, I have also watched nonprofits get burned by agencies. Here are some negative qualities about agencies that I have seen.

  • Expensive

  • Longterm contracts

  • Slow upstart and onboarding

  • Lots of research to find the right one

  • Don't get the results they promised

  • Use a cookie-cutter approach

  • Have bigger, more important clients than you

I'm not agency-bashing here. I have helped nonprofits get set up with great agencies to have very successful partnership. But using an agency can be risky. If you are not fully confident that an agency is that right solution for you, hiring a freelancer can be a fantastic option. You can even hire a freelancer to help you figure out if using an agency is the right solution for your needs.

"He’s a pillar of accountability and performance on our team and has me feel more confident about what we can do."

"Ryan is a highly organized project manager and highly effective communicator.  His level of transparency and thoroughness around COS, criteria for decision making, explaining the application of technology to meet the needs of our strategic objectives is at a peak performance level. It makes him one, if not the, most efficient members of the team. His clarity and level of productivity helps raise the bar for others members of the team. He brings enthusiasm and balance consistently to his interactions. He easily builds rapport and trust with colleagues and clients, effectively communicates upward-downward-laterally, encourages collaboration with the team, generates and shares ideas, gladly shares expertise, clever and imaginative when confronted with obstacles, encourages colleagues to solve their own problems, and is willing to think to of the box and conceive of totally new strategies. He’s a pillar of accountability and performance on our team and has me feel more confident about what we can do and where we want to go."

"I can’t overstate what an important role Ryan has played in our team’s progress over the years."

"Ryan has been instrumental in strengthening our digital marketing strategy and operations since 2019. Although he works with us on a freelance basis, he has always felt like an integrated member of our team who genuinely cares about what’s best for our organization and how we can make the biggest impact. Ryan’s work is guided by the highest moral standards; he is responsive, honest, and inherently motivated to help organizations who he believes are doing good in the world. Rather than being strictly an implementer or order-taker, Ryan is proactive and frequently approaches us with great new ideas – totally unprompted – for how we can improve.

When Ryan joined our team, he thoughtfully and methodically whipped our digital marketing data into shape by cleaning up our Google Analytics, filtering out spam web traffic, and helping us develop a sustainable system for creating detailed tracking links that has allowed us to collect highly useful data in the years since. He has built comprehensive reports and dashboards for us in Google Data Studio, managing data quality assurance with an eagle eye, and consistently providing meaningful analysis that helps us make data-informed decisions. His latest project is leading strategy and implementation for our lead generation efforts, and his meticulous and fast-paced approach to split testing has resulted in a significant increase in email sign-up conversions.

Ryan has also helped us source and vet other consultants and agencies to support various aspects of our digital fundraising and has proven time and again how valuable it can be for teams with limited resources to work with contractors rather than add full-time headcount. I am continually amazed by the quality of the work Ryan can produce in a short amount of time – making his contributions both impactful and cost-efficient. I can’t overstate what an important role Ryan has played in our team’s progress over the years. I hesitate to share this recommendation with the world because I’m reluctant to share Ryan with other clients!"

Services I Offer to Help You Achieve Your Growth Goals

I offer a variety of services for nonprofits from specific results-based projects, to ad-hoc support, to high-level advising. Below are some of the common ways I support my nonprofit clients, but if you have other ideas for how I can serve your organization, please contact me.

Website Visitor to Donor Funnel

Supplement your fundraising campaigns with a predictable, data-driven website visitor to donor funnel that runs on autopilot and can be optimized over time

Nonprofit digital marketing teams run fundraising campaigns throughout the year, but typically struggle to implement an effective evergreen revenue stream. It's true that donations come in through the website throughout the year, unaffiliated with a specific campaign, but they aren't predictable. By implementing a website visitor to donor funnel, we will create a new predictable revenue stream for your digital marketing team to supplement your fundraising campaigns.

We will deploy sign up forms across your website, giving visitors the opportunity to give us their email address, often in exchange for a free download. We will test and optimize these sign up forms to find the messaging and design that works best for your users. As we optimize these sign up forms, we will convert more and more of your visitors to your email list.

We will drop these leads into an email nurture sequence that will educate them about your work and then invite them to become donors over a series of emails. We will study the performance of this funnel and optimize it over time to maximize effectiveness. After they complete the nurture sequence, they will be dropped into your general email list where they can be invited into your programmatic offerings and invitations to donate.

Through the use of reporting, we will discover the value of these leads. For example, if we bring in 100 new leads in a given month, we will understand, on average, how many of them will become donors, how long it will take for them to become donors and how much they are worth once they donate.

All of this—from email sign up to nurture to donation—will then be used to create a predictable return on investment (ROI), so you can confidently advocate for budget to bring more leads into this funnel by way of advertising or other methods. Imagine being able to go to your team and say, we want to spend $1,000 on advertising because we know that we can get 100 leads that will be worth $2,000 within a year. Your budget conversations shift from being deficit-based to ROI-based.

I list this as the first offering in my services because through my extensive experience with nonprofits, I've learned that establishing a funnel like this can be a game changer for most nonprofits. I've learned that this is a valuable way that I can bring my expertise to help nonprofits. Plus, this project combines many of the services listed below including lead generation, landing page construction, email marketing, automation, conversion optimization, and data and reporting.

Lead Generation

Many more website visitors would give you their email addresses if it was just easier to do so. Giving their email address is often the easiest way for a visitor to engage with a nonprofit, especially if they want to get involved, but are too busy at the moment to take a bigger action. I'll deploy email sign up forms across your website, often offering a free download, to convert your website visitors into leads. We'll optimize these sign up forms to find the right design and messaging that works best for your users and gets the best conversion rate. Over time, we'll increase the number of website visitors that fill out a sign up form to become lead. Soon you'll start to see your email list grow!

Landing Page Construction

It's important to be able to quickly and easily produce beautiful landing pages to promote your latest offering or to convert users to your email list. If you don't already have the ability to produce landing pages, I'll deploy a landing page builder such as Unbounce. I have extensive experience building landing pages. I have a strong understanding of content architecture, web copy, and user experiences. We'll establish the goals of your landing pages and then I'll build you beautiful landing pages that convert your users into your calls -to-action. We'll split test the pages to optimize them over time and to understand what design and messaging works best for your users. These landing pages can be used to promote a program to your users or to act as a destination for converting visitors from ads or social media.

Website Optimization

I'll help you optimize your website

Lead Nurturing

Too often, nonprofits drop their new leads into their general email list. This means that someone who signs up on your website could get a newsletter the next day or even a fundraising appeal without ever being nurtured. I'll help you implement an automated email sequence that nurtures your leads over the course of a series of emails. This will ensure that your leads are educated about the work that you do and primed to participate in your programs or make a donation. We'll test and optimize this sequence over time to maximize its effectiveness.

Testing & Conversion Optimization

One of the backbones of a strong marketing strategy is ongoing testing and conversion optimization. There is always room for optimizing the design and messaging of your website, forms, emails, ads, etc. to get more users to take the actions you want to take. I'll identify the most important conversions that you want to optimize, ensure that the proper analytics and reporting is in place, and then deploy best practices and split testing to improve your conversion rates. Whether you want to get more users to complete a donation form, sign up for your email list, or going from one website page to the next, there is always opportunity to optimize your design and messaging to get more users to take the action you want them to take. Conversion optimization is so valuable because you are focusing on giving your existing users a better experience as a complimentary strategy to getting more users.

Email Marketing

I have extensive experience in email marketing. I can help you design your email marketing strategy, optimize your email production workflow, implement best practices, write your emails, build your emails, send your emails, split test your emails, and report on the performance of your emails.

A Growth Strategist, Business Coach, and Thought Partner

I help coach my clients in their strategies

A client of mine whose budget was tight recently half-joked to me that if they had to let go of someone, they would let go of their business coach before they let go of me. This is because the value that I was offering my client extended well beyond administering Ontraport to helping them strategize their plan and tactics for segmenting and communicating with their email list in order to promote their upcoming course. I'm often hired for initial projects with my Clients and then brought into high level strategy and planning sessions because they realize that my extensive experience in marketing as well as my growth mindset and my strong communication skills make me an ideal thought partner for developing plans and growth strategies. In fact, I have clients who hire me entirely to join their team as a thought partner. They are looking for someone to bring new perspectives and fresh ideas and they already have someone that does the implementation.

A Mind for Business Process Optimization and Automation

There are two ways to earn more revenue: get more sales or save staff time—Ontraport does both

One of the things that I love most about my work with my Clients is business process creation, optimization, and automation. This work involves coming into your business, researching your existing business processes, and making recommendations for how you can use Ontraport to optimize and automate your business processes to save potentially significant amount of staff time that can then be reallocated to focus on the things that matter. I've used Ontraport to build staff portals for viewing and acting on specific data sets, build a job application and management tool, build a contracting and invoicing tool, and build a Fellowship program management tool. All of these solutions save my Clients countless hours that can then be used on the stuff that matters. In addition, business process optimization can be as simple as helping my Clients optimize their workflows for launching promotional campaigns or sales funnels.

A Certified Ontraport Expert

I bring cutting edge thinking in automation to my clients

I have been working in marketing for over 15 years. You can say I'm a marketer who found Ontraport. My marketing-first approach means that when you hire me you're not just getting someone who passed a certification and knows how to administer and implement Ontraport, but you get someone who knows how to use all the features of Ontraport to implement a full marketing strategy to increase sales and grow revenue. When you hire me, you're not just hiring someone to check off a list of tasks, but you hire someone to use Ontraport as a marketing powerhouse to help you achieve your business goals, drive sales, and increase revenue. I bring expertise in email marketing, lead generation, conversion optimization, sales funnel optimization, landing page optimization, analytics and reporting, and business and marketing strategy.

A Passion for Testing and Optimizing

Testing and optimization is at the core of a powerful marketing strategy

A strong marketing strategy incorporates a testing and optimizing plan that is nimble and consistent. By split testing popups, landing pages, emails, ads, messaging, etc. you can constantly learn about what your constituency responds to and you can constantly improve the performance of your sales funnels. This is far more important than launching the "perfect" sales funnel. I encourage my clients to launch quickly and then test as much as possible. Too often, I've seen clients with sales funnels that were launched months or years ago that haven't been touched since. This means that huge opportunities are being missed to improve these sales funnels over time. With proper testing, these funnels can go from being low-performing and stagnant to high-performing and very active.

Skillful Data Analysis and Reporting that Informs Decision-Making

Good data and reporting is the backbone to your business

Working with data and building beautiful reports is one of my favorite areas of work with my clients. I find it extremely satisfying to solve the problem of how to give my clients reports that help them make important business decisions. The process includes figuring out which data to collect, how to collect the data, and then how to report the data, whether it's via Ontraport's native reporting functionality or using a third party tool like Google Looker Studio. I have helped my clients transform their work from not having a focus on data and reporting to using data and reporting as an integral part of their marketing and decision-making processes. Through the use of good data, my clients are able to understand things such as where their sales or donations are coming from, whether their clients prefer monthly or yearly subscriptions, the most effective messaging to use for lead generation on their websites, and much more.

Qualities that Come from Years of Experience

These are some of the qualities my Clients consistently celebrate in my work

Quality Assurance

I deliver high-quality, thoroughly tested and reviewed work, so-much-so that my clients consistently task me with launching their marketing campaigns without review.

Professionalism

With many years of working in offices, with teams, for businesses and nonprofits, I've developed a professionalism of someone who takes their work very seriously, communicates respectfully to clients, and does what they say they will do.

Value

I bring such a high value to my clients that they often keep me around after our initial projects to support them in an ongoing role. They find that having my expertise available to them as needed adds high value to their nonprofit or business.

Project Management

Project management is one of my areas of excellent competency. I've managed many projects of many shapes and sizes over many years. I'm capable of holding may moving parts and managing teams to deliver the results that you need.

I am often commended for my strong communication skills. This means that I communicate clearly and effectively over email and on calls to individuals or to teams. I communicate with respect and clarity that ensures we will work efficiently and effectively.

Best-Practices

Innovation

I can implement your ideas and solutions as you design them, or I can also help you imagine new ideas and solutions that go beyond your current thinking to solve your challenges and achieve your goals.

Efficiency

My extensive experience means that I can navigate my way quickly through Ontraport with expert precision. This means that you'll be paying me to execute on projects, not figuring out how to solve them or how to navigate my way around Ontraport.

Problem-Solving

You don't have to know all the solutions because I can come into your nonprofit or business, assess your needs, and develop the solutions that you need to solve your challenges and achieve your goals.

Big Picture Thinking

I am able to get down and dirty with tedious tasks while also being able to see the big picture. This enables me to deliver complex projects from beginning to end, making sure to hit deadlines that may be far out in the future.

Integrity

I do what I say I'm going to do when I say I'm going to do it. If I make a mistake, I take responsibility, clean up the mess, and fix it. Integrity means that you can trust me to deliver what I promise, work efficiently, bill honestly, and work independently without micromanaging me.

Partnership

I can check off a list of tasks for my clients as needed if they already know what they want and what they want me to do. But, if desired, I can also act as a partner to provide guidance and coaching based on my extensive experience to up-level the projects and tasks to improve results.

Confidently Ask for More Budget for Your Projects

If we invest X, we'll get Y

One thing I hear over and over from nonprofit Digital Marketing Teams is that they are being asked to achieve big goals but are deprioritized in the budget. The Digital Marketing Team's goals and outcomes always seem to be elevated in board meetings, but underfunding in budget decisions. By establishing a clear website-visitor-to-lead-to-donor funnel, nonprofit Digital Marketing Teams can start to build the confidence to ask for the budget that they need to achieve the outcomes that their board and executive team are asking for. This is because they now have baseline data to say if you give us $X, we'll achieve Y outcome.

How You Can Hire Me

I offer flexible options for a partnership

By the Project

Let's tackle a specific project

Paying by the project is a great way to ensure that you keep me hyper-focused on the exact results that you are after. This is a good approach if you are very clear on exactly what you want. We will start with a roadmapping session to ensure that I understand your needs, that all expectations are clear, and we are aligned. From there I'll produce an SOW and then we'll sign a contract. This process tends to take longer to get started since it takes time to understand the exact scope of work to price it correctly, but the tradeoff is that there is a very clear understanding of exactly what I am delivering and how much you are paying.

Ad Hoc Support

A marketing expert available as needed

Often my clients are looking to have marketing support available to them as needed for ad hoc projects that come up throughout the year. They want the confidence of knowing that if something comes they need additional expertise or support that goes beyond the capacity of their existing team, that they can call upon me to help. In this set up, there are no guaranteed number of hours that I will work. Instead, I will put in hours as needed to support your marketing efforts. With this approach we can start working together quickly.

Ongoing Support

Supplement your team with monthly hours

A common way for me to support my nonprofit clients is to work them for a certain number of hours every month. This is advantageous because they can allocate a specific predictable budget for our work together. Typically, we move into this type of arrangement after I've done some initial work for them and they've realized the value that I offer. This is a great way for nonprofits to supplement their existing marketing teams with extra expertise and support without committing to a new full time position. Because I can stay hyper focused on specific projects and I can skip most of the staff meetings, my clients tend to get a lot out of this set up even at a small number of hours every month.

Let's Talk

I've worked with enough nonprofits to know that you may know exactly what you want or you may need some help identifying and prioritizing how to achieve the outcome you're after. Either way, let's talk!
